PGLS CURRICULUM-SAMPLE PROJECT

Raising student awareness of global issues is increasingly important as the countries of the world become more interdependent. One common global issue that receives much media attention but lacks action on our part is "global warming." For the group that chooses "global warming" as their topic of interest, they will receive a list of questions that could help them start thinking about this issue.

QUESTIONS
Q. What is global warming and how does it affect climate change?
Q. What factors are contributing global warming?
Q. How is climate change affecting me, my community, and the environment I live in? How does it affect people living across the globe?
Q. What can I do to stop global climate change?

Participants will then be exposed to the effects of global warming through powerful  media clips and inspirational lectures. Then they will be presented with a list of research topics to delve further into the causes and consequences of global warming.

RESEARCH TOPICS
  • TECH: Innovations to reduce the speed of climate change
  • POLICY: EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) and its actions to battle climate change
  • EDUCATION: Comparative study of climate change education among different countries
  • SCIENCE: Temperature change in the next 100 years and its effect on different parts of the world

Pangaea Mentors will teach research skills essential not only to complete the project but also in excelling at the college-level.  After extensive research, Participants will present their research findings and have an opportunity to lead discussions to further their knowledge about their topics. Participants will then collaborate and come up with a plan of action.

APPLICATION
As a plan of action students can do the following:
  • Conceive a new non-profit or for-profit organization dedicated to solving a local or national problem. Students should consider the organization’s name, mission statement, and means of effecting change and funding itself
  • Produce an audio or video podcast or radio program of editorials addressing the need for more attention or solutions to the issue
  • Create a one-page proposal for addressing a current problem highlighting either a solution or a plan for increased exposure
